Smiths Falls homes for sale

About Smiths Falls

If you don't mind driving a little farther out of town, then consider one of these homes for sale in Smiths Fall, founded in 1783 on land granted to United Empire Loyalist, Thomas Smyth, where you can afford a much larger house than you might in downtown Ottawa. While historic houses might be your pleasure, there are also newer homes, condos for those wanting the latest amenities.

It's a small town feel with the convenience of nearby Ottawa. Travel west from Ottawa, past Carleton Place, then south about 72 km or 50 minutes, and you're in the Town of Smiths Falls - similar distance as Perth is from Ottawa. The Rideau Canal runs right through the town, with four locks. While you're exploring the area, another lovely town of Merrickville is just east, Brockville is 50 km south-east and Kingston is 95 km south-west.

While it's in the Census division for Lanark County from, Smiths Falls is separate from the total at 9,254 residents as of 2021, 5.4% more than in 2016.

Smiths Falls is on the Rideau Canal system for recreational boating and is a major railway junction point, receiving regular passenger service to Ottawa and Toronto from VIA Rail. They also have an airport for general aviation called Smiths Falls-Montague Airport.

One of the best known manufacturers of the area was The Hershey Company from 1963 to 2008 when they closed their doors to open a factory in Mexico to take advantage of cheaper labour. In 2014, the former Hershey chocolate facility was purchased by Tweed Marijuana Inc., known publicly as Canopy Growth Corporation or WEED on the Toronto Stock Exchange, and has created over 750 jobs.

Ironically, Canopy Growth Corp. has commenced the production of cannabis infused chocolate edibles, bringing the flow of chocolate back to the area. The public can tour the Tweed facility to learn about the history, science and culture of cannabis.

Professional Golfer, Brooke Henderson, was born in Smiths Falls, as were a number of former NHL Hockey players.

The town is home to the Junior A hockey team Smiths Falls Bears that play in the Central Canada Hockey League, and the Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League that operates throughout Ontario and Western Quebec. Minor and adult leagues are in abundance for those who enjoy baseball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, ball hockey and hockey. Next to the Rideau River is Lower Reach, providing access to baseball diamonds, play structures, soccer fields and a splash pad.

The Rideau Trail passes through Smiths Falls and operates year-round, providing residents with the opportunity for scenic walking and hiking, snowshoeing and backcountry.

Public Education is managed by the Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic Education is under the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. Students wishing to attend a Catholic high school are bussed to Perth.

Public Schools include: Duncan J. Schoular Public School, Chimo Elementary School, Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute; Catholic Schools include: St. Francis de Sales Catholic Elementary School (French Immersion optional), St. Luke's Catholic High School (alternative school).

The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital serves both communities in a state-of-the-art facility.
