About Merrickville / Burritts Rapids

Merrickville-Wolford, a village-status municipality was incorporated January 1, 1998 after amalgamating village of Merrickville with the township of Wolford. It's located in Eastern Ontario in the County of Leeds-Grenville and spans both shores of the Rideau River.

The village of Merrickville comprises a number of communities: Carleys Corners, Eastons Corners, Hemlock Corners, Jasper, Snowdons Corners, Wolford Centre, Wolford Chapel and Yule.

Once in Merrickville, the Rideau Canal locks system is a popular gathering spot to sit and watch boats and enjoy the roaring water, only steps away from shopping and restaurants. The region has seen a huge economic boost over the last 20 years with an increase in tourism.

The Blockhouse - a National Historic Site of Canada, built by Lieutenant-Colonel John By to defend the Rideau Canal was later restored by Parks Canada, and operates as a museum during the peak of summer, operated by the Merrickville and District Historical Society. The surrounding shops draw tourists from all over to buy wares from the talented local artists and craftspeople.

Formerly known as Merrick's Mills, Merrickville was founded by Loyalist settler William Merrick in 1794. The waterpower spawned his building a dam across the river, followed by grist, saw and carding mills. He then built a beautiful stone house that overlooked his mills.

Rideau Canal construction began in 1827 and many crew died owing to malaria, promptly the erection of a plaque to remember these men. Merrick's Mills thrived for years. Neighbouring Smiths Falls' railway hub displaced Merrick's Mills as an industrial hub and finally, in 1915 a power company formed in Merrickville to provide electricity for the mills.

At Census 2021, the population was 3,135, up 2.2% from 2016.

Merrickville is best known for its 30+ artisans for whom they hold an Artists Guild Studio Tour the last weekend of September and first weekend of October for them to sell their wares.

Known and loved by gardeners, horticulturalists, collectors and designers, the Rideau Woodland Ramble Displays Gardens and Centre is one of Canada's top nurseries with a large range of rare and exotic plans, trees and shrubs. It's just south of the village of Burritts Rapids.

The Merrickville Classic Car Show will be coming to the Merrickville Fairgrounds on July 16, 2023, with music, BBQ, draws and prizes.
