About Russell / Embrun

The bedroom community of Russell is part of Russell Township in Eastern Ontario, about 40km southeast of Ottawa. With a predominantly English-speaking community it's a police village with the majority of its 4,464 (at 2016 Census) inhabitants commuting to Ottawa for work.

The town produces quite a number of hockey prospects; the most notable are to the Embrun Panthers Jr. C hockey team. They have a swimming pool, skating area, library, all-weather running track, curling rink and daily services. Residents can take advantage of practicing lawyers, doctors, dentists and other professionals.

Named after Embrun, France, Embrun is the largest community in the Township of Russell in Eastern Ontario, neighbouring Russell. With 57% of its residents speaking French, Embrun is a bedroom community with most having a post-secondary education working in Ottawa's civil service or large high-tech sector.

After the Great Depression, decline in agriculture industry and rural depopulation, Embrun recovered and began to grow rapidly with the construction of Highway 417 which significantly cut down travel time to Ottawa. Embrun's population has seen a 25% jump from 2016 to 2021 to 8,680 residents.

Prior to  mid-20th century, agriculture was the main employment base, and it still has a strong presence as a major distributor of dairy products and bovine. Embrun has a large number of French-Canadian families that grow and sell their own produce in the village as well as in Farmers' Markets in Ottawa's Byward Market and Westboro neighbourhood.

Embrun has a number of distinct neighbourhoods, separated by open space. This will likely change with the amount of infill planned in the municipality.

  • Embrun Business Park: extreme west, home to almost all major business in the town, Place d'Embrun Shopping Centre, restaurant chains and major services, but lacks small business. Mostly commercial.
  • Industrial Park: mostly warehouses, OPP station
  • Chantal Development: quiet residential in the west, infill subdivision planned to the north
  • Town Centre/Centre-Ville: two schools and a church, with some infill and more planned
  • Lapointe Development: in the eastern part of Embrun, currently undergoing infill expansion.
  • Embrun South: housing subdivision, and older, mixed development.
  • Maplevale: South of Lapointe Development, more affuent with higher land values and larger homes.

Transit:

While OC Transpo doesn't directly service the area, there is a Park and Ride 8 km away to take communters to Ottawa for the work day. They also have a Trillium Coach Lines service with 3 peak-hour express routes to downtown Ottawa, but it's more expensive than OC Transpo.

Schools:

There are a large number of schools serving Russell and Embrun students.

  • English Public: Cambridge Public School, Russell High School
  • English Catholic: Mother Teresa Elementary School, St. Thomas Acquinas Secondary School
  • French Public: De la Rivière Castor Elementary School, L'Académie de la Seigneurie
  • French Catholic: École élémentaire catholique Embrun, École secondaire catholique Embrun
