About Perth

Located in Eastern Ontario on the Tay River about 80 km southwest of Ottawa, Perth is the County Seat of Lanark County and was named after the Scottish town and river.

Perth was established as a military settlement in 1816, after the War of 1812 and as such, many of the settlers were European military veterans as well as waves of Scottish and Irish immigrants.

The Scottish stonemasonry is evident in the area's buildings and in the Rideau Canal locks. It's a feast for the eyes and makes the locals very proud of their heritage.

At Census 2021, the population was 6,469, 9% higher than 2016. The median household income in 2016 was $52,429.

Perth was originally the military, judicial, political and social capital of the Ottawa Valley north and west until the construction of the Rideau Canal and lumber industry which meant it was eclipsed by Bytown, now the City of Ottawa.

For those horse lovers, the Town erected a bronze real-life statue of the local world show-jumping champion Ian Millar and his horse Big Ben in Stewart Park across from Code's Mill building.

Perth is the site of the first installation of a telephone outside of Bell's experimental installations. By 1887, there were 19 telephones in Perth with a switchboard in Dentist, Dr. Kennedy's office - a friend of Alexander Graham Bell.

Born out of a wish to help Perth, Scotland celebrate 800th Anniversary, the 8km Annual Kilt Run represents Scotland's 800-year existence. In 2016 the Kilt Run attracted 5,000 runners to help celebrate Perth's 200th Anniversary.
