About Carp and Huntley

The Village of Carp is a rural community in the northwest of the City of Ottawa, on the Carp River, approximately 33 km from downtown. It got its name from the large number of carp fish that lived there and obviously from the Carp River that runs through it.

The town is located on the southern end of the Carp Hills that have been compared to Gatineau Park, with several walking trails. In 1866 Carp became a postal village with a main Post Office where John Graham served as post master.

Huntley is a geographic township and originally part of Carleton County in eastern Ontario, that includes the communities of Carp, Corkery, Huntley, Manion Corners and Westwood. It's first settlers in 1850 were Irish immigrants. At Canada 2021 Census, the population was 10,922. In 2001, Huntley became part of the City of Ottawa and its residents use Carp as their mailing address even if they live a distance away from the main village.

Since 2000 there were 3 years when home prices decreased, but there were also 10 years where we've seen double digit increases. The number of homes selling used to be quite low at 30-40 and now we are seeing about 120 homes sell each year. Review the chart to review average prices over the last few years. Home range from modest to very grand.

There are two schools in the area: Huntley Centennial Public School and St. Michael's, Corkery Catholic School. Students in High School have to bus to West Carleton or Kanata.

The Carp Airport is just south of the village and the only airport in Ottawa with readily available hangar space for local pilots.

With the closure of the Ottawa SuperEX in 2011, the Carp Fair, established in 1863, is the only fair close to Ottawa. The main fairground and buildings house the Carp Fair each September and the popular Carp Farmers' Market every Saturday from May to October.

One of Carp's main attractions is the Difenbunker, Canada's Cold War museum - a former top-secret underground bunker, built to house key members of the government in the event of a nuclear attack on Ottawa. The site was decommissioned in 1999. It's a great day trip for visitors and locals alike to better understand a piece of history and experience this underground shelter.

The Cheshire Cat Pub is also a major attraction for the area. A family owned and run business for the last 16 years boasts excellent British pub fare, a great atmosphere, and a memorable experience.

Kin Vinyards on Carp Ridge is another local favourite situated on 47 acres of picturesque landscape and offering a unique tasting experience in their outdoor setting.
