About Vanier

Formerly known as Eastview, this neighbourhood was renamed Vanier in 1969, in honour of the deceased Governor-General of Canada, Georges Vanier. Located in Ottawa’s East end, and amalgamated into the City of Ottawa in 2001, the neighbourhood is located on the east bank of the Rideau River, across from Lowertown and Sandy Hill, and just south of Rockliffe Park, New Edinburgh, Lindenlea, and Manor Park.

Vanier was originally a popular destination for civil servants wanting to live away from downtown Ottawa and it attracted a large French Canadian population making it the number one French-speaking area in the Capital. It no longer has a majority francophone population among the densely populated 118,806 residents (Census 2021).

While more expensive in the last few years with increased gentrification, Vanier is still one of the last relatively inexpensive neighbourhoods for young families to own a home while still being close to the downtown core. Residents are also close to parks, playgrounds, community centres and recreational facilities. The population of Kingsview Ridge, on the western edge of Vanier, close to the Rideau River is among the more affluent.

Vanier has a mix of housing, adding to its distinct, unpretentious character. Included are small, war-time houses, 1950s and '60s bungalows, townhomes, condominium developments, and detached homes, nestled close together. The Vanier area has seen home prices steadily increase. There were a few blips in 2006 and between 2014-2018 where we saw price decreases from year to year, but the most recent average price in 2021 of $471,984 saw a 6.2% increase over the previous year.

Notable attractions:

The Vanier Museopark is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and disseminating the heritage of the Quartier Vanier, Richlieu Park and the French-speaking population of Ottawa. It's the only francophone museum in Ottawa and rarity with its dedication to French Canadians. Their sugar shack is located in the centre of the park and their sugaring-off season tapping 1,000 trees and producing 400 litres of maple syrup is not to be missed. The shack can be reserved for special occasions and can fit up to 42 people.
