About New Edinburgh / Lindenlea

Only three kilometers from Parliament Hill, New Edinburgh-Lindenlea has a population of approximately 3,500 people. It is considered to be a more affluent neighbourhood. This quieter neighbourhood is made up of residential detached, town homes, and smaller apartment buildings with larger condominium buildings currently under construction.

The Governor General lives here in Rideau Hall and Prime Minister of Canada resides here as well at 24 Sussex Drive. Currently the prime minister is not living in 24 Sussex as the home requires millions of dollars in renovations and instead is living at Rideau Cottage on the grounds. There are a number of embassies throughout the neighbourhood as well.

The New Edinburgh Pub is a local institution, even if it is actually located in Lindenlea just a few blocks south of New Edinburgh. It is located on the Beechwood strip that is home to shopping and trendy restaurants. Bordering New Edinburgh to the north is Sussex Drive that turns into Rockcliffe Parkway boasting a scenic route along the Ottawa River.

A two-minute drive across the St. Patrick Bridge will bring you to Lower Town and the ByWard Market where you can enjoy shopping, restaurants and Ottawa’s trendiest nightlife. With 5 elementary schools and 2 high schools, including private and IB World Schools Elmwood School and Ashbury College, it’s well serviced for educational needs.

Amenities in the area include:

  • New Edinburgh Heritage Walking Trail - 3.9 km loop trail for all skill levels and used for walking, running or bird watching. You'll pass by the Governor General's and Prime Minister's residences.
  • New Edinburgh Park - a local favourite with lots of green space, tennis courts, picnic spots and a skating rink
  • Stanley Park - includes an off-leash area for dogs and is home to the annual Lumière Festival
  • Rideau Falls Park - where the Rideau River plunges into the Ottawa River

Notable sites and shops:

  • French Embassy (42 Sussex Drive), a wonderful example of 1930s Art Deco - currently Doors Open Ottawa festival is virtual, but the doors may actually open in the summer of 2022
  • Beechwood Cemetery - one of the oldest in the country, spread across 160 acres, designated National Cemetery of Canada, Royal Canadian Mounted Police National Memorial Cemetery, and National Military Cemetery of Canada.
  • Behind Rideau Hall - vintage skating rink built 1872
  • Books on Beachwood - one of the last bookstores in Ottawa
  • Electric Street Gallery
  • Clothes Encounters of a Second Time - gently used fashion
  • Jacobsons - quaint gourmet food shop
  • Tavern on the Falls - patio eatery open from Spring to Fall, with a stunning view of the falls, the Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills
