About Old Ottawa East

Old Ottawa East (Vieil Ottawa Est in French) is located in central Ottawa, south of Nicholas Street, Avenue Road to the south and between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River. It includes the area around Lees Avenue, the Flora Footbridge which opened to pedestrians in 2019 and connect to The Glebe community. 

Right through the centre runs Main Street which has undergone a much-needed overhaul to allow wider walking paths, bicycle lanes and a more appealing area for residents and those attending Saint Paul University. Federated with the University of Ottawa since 1965, Saint Paul is a bilingual Catholic Pontifical university offering instruction in both official languages. 

The extensive underground and road construction work will continue along Main Street is expected to continue on to 2024, pending budget approvals.

The centre of the neighbourhood, originally the suburban community of Archville was incorporated as the village of Old Ottawa East in 1888 and is now home to Greystone Village, currently under construction y eQ Homes and The Regional Group with condo, townhouses and single family homes.

A neighbourhood known for its green space and properties near the Rideau River is home to approximately 7,000 residents. With access to Highway 417 and OC Transpo's Lees O-Train Station, residents are able to travel to different parts of the city with ease.

Old Ottawa East has elementary schools, a Catholic junior high and high school. Homes in close proximity to the Rideau River can be subject to flooding. Anyone can go to the City of Ottawa website and look on a “geomap” to see which homes and streets are on the flood plain.

Old Ottawa East is home to many independently owned businesses, including The Green Door, a popular vegetarian restaurant. Access to shopping in the Glebe is just a few minutes away across the Pretoria Bridge on Hawthorne Avenue or to the nightlife on Elgin Street.
