About the Golden Triangle

Named for its footprint in Ottawa's geography and located right next to Centretown is the Golden Triangle.  A triangular pocket in the south-east of downtown, running along the Rideau Canal and coming to a point as it meets Elgin Street. Its other borders are Laurier Avenue and the Queensway.

You will find great architecture and accommodations to suit everyone. From large, older homes and modern condos, to smaller apartments, it's a lively, walkable neighbourhood. It's also home to the Embassies or Greece, Germany and Armenia, which add to the architectural beauty and feel.

It's a unique area in which to live; satisfying the need for an urban vibe with high-end restaurants and welcoming pubs, as well as the need for outdoor recreation and more natural settings. The world's largest Canal is an obvious attraction whether you want to walk, cycle, boat or skate - there's no place like it.

You mustn't miss hot chocolate and a BeaverTail in the ByWard Market Square as your reward for embracing the famous skateway.  Also in the area are Minto Park, Golden Triangle Park and St. Luke's Park.

It can be a bit noisy in the evenings if you live on or close to Elgin Street with its bars, pubs and nightclubs. For some, this is also part of the appeal. Ottawa’s main police station is located at the south end of Elgin. Police can be found patrolling the area to keep things safe and under control.

Following is a diverse list of restaurants to check out in the Golden Triangle:

  • Al's Steakhouse
  • Gitanes
  • MacLaren's on Elgin
  • Town
  • Dakgogi Ottawa
  • Cumin & Pepper
  • Pure Kitchen Elgin
  • German Doner Kabob
  • House of Georgie's Sorento's Pizza
  • PI RHO Grill
  • Pancho Villa

There are three main OC Transpo routes that service the Golden Triangle along the main artery of Elgin Street, and transit stations at the Rideau Centre and MacKenzie King Bridge are a short walk away. Recently added is a pedestrian walkway allowing students direct access to the University of Ottawa campus.

The addition of the LRT Downtown West and East underground stations will make commuting to different parts of the city hassle-free for residents. For students and those who work in the downtown core, the Corkstown footbridge is an easy way to get to and from work/University by foot or bike.

Educational schools in close proximity are the Telfer School of Management, Lisgar Collegiate, the Bytown School of Singing, and Elgin Street Public School.

Also adding to the appeal is the proximity to the newly renovated National Arts Centre with it's capacity to welcome over 3,600 patrons, and the 180-store Rideau Centre where 20 million people visit annually. The Golden Triangle is also walking distance to the ByWard Market with an endless list of restaurants and shops, with places to sit and take in the buzz.

While thinking about the Golden Triangle, check out Centretown next door for what to see and do as well as homes to consider.
