About Mechanicsville

What we can say with great certainty is that Mechanicsville has a lot of rich history to share and came from blue-collar roots. Mechanicsville is located west of and right next to Tunney's Pasture, west of Lebreton Flats and north of Hintonburg.

On a map, you'll find it south of the Ottawa River, west of the O-Train Trillium Line, north of Scott Street, and east of Parkdale Avenue. A population of approximately 2,200 (at 2011 Census) and historically a working-class neighbourhood, Mechanicsville has seen much improvement over the years and is now seen as a hip and trendy place in which to live, work and play.

One of the largest employers, the Government of Canada complex, Tunney's Pasture, is named after Anthony Tunney, an Irish immigrant, who lived on Mechanicsville's Lyndale Avenue for the last 25 years of his life, which was his second home, after his first was destroyed in a fire. It's a snapshot into life in the 1890s. He was one of the first to purchase a lot on what is now Parkdale Avenue, overlooking Tunney's Pasture. He used to graze his and other lumber merchants' animals on what was then a vacant lot and the name unofficially became known as and adopted Tunney's Pasture.

On Burnside Avenue stands an apartment building that was the site of the River View Hotel, used mostly by short-term rail workers. Just south of Laroche Park where a new hockey is set to be built in a year or so, the landmark Protection of the Holy Virgin Memorial (Russian Orthodox) Church stands, built in 1988, to commemorate 1,000 years of Christianity in Russia. A tranquil spot that's away from the hustle and bustle of Scott Street and the Transitway. Another prominent landmark is the Embassy of Indonesia.

There are lots of infill new homes popping up all the time. Public transportation is easily accessible with OC Transpo buses available along Scott Street and Parkdale Avenue, with a major transitway at Tunney's Pasture. Mechanicsville has a mixture of residential homes, infill townhomes and newer high-rise apartment buildings.

Shopping and plenty of amenities are located south of Mechanicsville on Wellington Street, where you'll find some of the best restaurants in Ottawa. It's also a short bus ride or drive to Ottawa’s downtown core or to neighbourhoods like Little Italy, Hintonburg and Chintatown. Recreation includes Laroche Park and the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway (formerly the Ottawa River Parkway) along the Ottawa River.
