About Kanata Lakes / Marchwood Lakeside

In the Kanata community, the larger Kanata Lakes area, designed by Bill Terron, is also known as Marchwood-Lakeside and is located in Kanata’s North Ward in the west end of the city of Ottawa. It is 20km west of downtown Ottawa, north of the Queensway, west of Beaverbrook, east of Terry Fox Drive, and south of Morgan’s Grant. It has a population of 17,481 with a median age of 42 years.

Located within the community is the Kanata Golf and Country Club – soon to gain another housing development, and Kanata Centrum outdoor mall that provides access to a broad array of box store shopping, restaurants, banks, one of Ottawa’s largest movie theatres and other key services to meet your everyday needs. A second outdoor mall called the Signature Centre houses specialty shops such as MyHome Furniture, The Unrefined Olive, and Tweed & Hickory.

Home to the Kanata Symphony and Kanata Theatre; arts buffs can plan their entertainment with ease. If hockey and concerts are your thing, a short 4km drive will take you to the Canadian Tire Centre, home of the Ottawa Senators, and a venue for year-long entertainment.

Built mostly after 1988, homes in the suburban neighbourhood of Kanata Lakes are more expensive than other areas of Kanata. Homebuyers are offered a nice variety of options from mostly single-family homes, to townhomes and condominiums. Homes in the area are built mostly by Cardel Homes, Richcraft, Urbandale, Holiztner and Phoenix Homes, with new condo developments built by Brigil.

Largely a green space that includes the golf course, outdoor activities are plentiful. From scenic walking within a network of wooded trails, to running, biking and hiking, to skating, sledding and cross-country skiing in the winter months. Kids can enjoy splash pads, tennis courts and basketball courts.

The Beaver Pond is a provincially-protected wetland, providing a safe habitat to various protected species – beavers being an obvious inhabitant. Their carefully crafted dams are a marvel for nature-lovers. Surrounding the Beaver Pond is a 2 km trail to take in all the sights.

This area also has easy access to the Queensway, so residents are able to travel downtown and to other parts of the city. Other amenities include Kanata Sailing Club, Bicycle Club, March Kanata Tennis Club and Soccer clubs.

There are 4 schools in the area:

  • All Saints High School
  • St. Gabriel School
  • Earl of March Secondary School
  • École Catholique Saint Rémi.
